Call for Pennsylvania Startups: The Keystone State Is Ready to Build

Pennsylvania has the world-leading research institutions, the technical talent, and the gritty founders willing to dig in and build. What it doesn't have is enough economic attention. Seed-stage companies here are routinely valued at a fraction of what comparable startups raise in New York or San Francisco, not because the ideas or the teams are weaker, but because too few investors and partner institutions are paying attention to this state.

That gap isn't a talent or technology problem. It's an awareness problem, and it's one Pennsylvania can no longer afford to ignore. But undervalued does not mean unproven. It means opportunity that is currently being left on the table in Pennsylvania: one overlooked pitch, one under-capitalized founder, and one company forced to relocate to coastal markets at a time.

Keystone Innovation Collaborative (KIC) was built to close that gap by connecting the state's universities, founders, regional partners, and investors around a shared mission: keep Pennsylvania's best new companies here by giving them the capital and support they need to grow. That work is expanding. A new PA-first accelerator program is currently taking shape for 2027, one designed to give promising pre-seed PA founders catalytic investment and hands-on development from day one, more details to be announced soon. And Keystone Innovation Fund II is another brand new investment vehicle focused specifically on backing PA’s most promising early stage tech-enabled startups.

Nowhere is the need more urgent than in the sectors below, where Pennsylvania already has a headstart historically in some cases, yet cannot afford to lose ground as artificial intelligence and emerging technologies transform legacy industries. This is a call for PA startups!

1. Health & Life Sciences: From early-stage diagnostics to novel medical devices and therapeutics, Pennsylvania’s hospital and leading research networks are producing breakthroughs that require sustained investment for these innovative impacts to reach patients.

2. Advanced Manufacturing: Pennsylvania already has the factories, the skilled workforce, and more than a century of experience leading in manufacturing. What’s needed now is risk capital to help transform that strong foundation into smart automated production built for the next industry 4.0 era.

3. Agricultural Technology: Pennsylvania's agricultural roots as well as its diverse crop portfolio and relatively smaller farms make it a natural laboratory for bringing to market new precision farming tech, crop science innovations, and sustainable food systems. But farmers can be traditionally slower to adopt new technologies and techniques, so investment capital will also require trusted partners for successful AgTech implementation.

4. Energy Technology: The state's industrial legacy and abundant natural resources provide a foundation for next generation energy innovations of all varieties, as well as the industrial applications that new energy will power. But energy technology ventures are capital-intensive and unforgiving of funding gaps.

5. Robotics & AI: Home to some of the country's leading robotics research, Pennsylvania founders are already leaders in building autonomous systems, connected devices, and intelligent machines. Applied AI needs investor fluency and sustained funding to continually compete for that market share today, not later.

Pennsylvania's startup ecosystem does not need convincing that it's ready for what’s next. It needs the rest of the world to notice too. Over the next several weeks, we’re excited to highlight up-and-coming startups across each of these industry sectors, to help bring greater investor and institutional awareness to the many successes Pennsylvania’s innovation economy is already producing.
